Showing Some Personality

This is probably the blog I have been most excited about writing.  As I have been reading books on bird/nature photography, they stress watching the bird and trying to capture their personality.  This also means studying your subject before you go out and take pictures.  Knowing how they fish, you they move, knowing their tendencies, all of which you can easily find by doing a little research.  So, after watching these birds for a while I started picking on their personalities.  These do make some of the funniest pictures for sure!!

Tricolored Heron:  This guy had gotten into the catnip!!  He was running around, or prancing around, trying to find some fish.  He was not very successful though and he was getting really wet in the meantime.  So after dreadfully missing a fish, he shook out his feathers and then started again.

Black Skimmer:  These were really hard to take pictures of.  There were so many of them and I was having trouble creating a picture that would be appealing to the eye.  This guy in front seemed to be getting a little tired of posing!!

Brown Pelican:  Yeah, I do not know.  Hope he got the fish!!

And then there is this Little Egret.  I stayed with him for a long time and he did not disappoint.  There were a few moments when I thought he actually was putting on a show for the camera.

I have....a scratch!

Wow that felt good!!

Singing in the rain.....I'm singing in the rain!

You can't see me!!

Tear!

What are you looking at?

Too funny!!!  Thanks for following!!

Well Hey There!!

I wish I could always get this close to the wildlife.  Some of it is the camera gear but some of it was just patiences and a couple of birds that were stubborn and did not want to move.  Getting a sharp eye might be one of my favorite things to aim for.  It adds a fierceness to the picture and I love it!!!  So here are a few of my favorites.  Thanks to all the birds for sitting still!!

Good Reflections

As I have said before, I am learning that it is not enough just to take a picture of a bird.  You have to add something else or something special to the picture to really make it catch the eye.  One of my favorite things to do when taking pictures down by the water, is to look for opportunities to get good reflections of the birds in the water.  This, at times, has proved difficult.  It is amazing how many times I just purely miss the reflection.  I am so concentrated on the bird I totally forget to look down.  Then there is the problem of cooperation.  In a perfect world, the bird would stand still, look directly into the sun for good lighting, and then do something fun or show their personality a little.  No, they have no desire in helping.  They land with a splash and then drive their beak violently into the water, making lots of ripples which do not show reflections, well, at all!!  Exhibit A:

White Ibis
Even he looks a little shocked at his reflection!!  Would have been a great picture with a little personality but no....ripples.  (and the nictitating membrane is over the eye but that is not the point here!!)

But I did manage to get some good reflections.  Here are a few of my favorite:

And yes, he managed to catch a fish!!

The ripples in the water almost got me here but I managed to wait till the ripples cleared a little and got a great reflection of the eye!!

For those interested, the plume of white feathers on the top of this little blue heron's head indicates it is breeding time!! :)

Taking Flight

I love taking pictures of birds flying but it is surely something that I am going to have to get better at.  I always seem to get the background in focus or NOTHING in focus.  It is hard to track a bird and then keep focused on them as they move through the air but with practice I feel I am getting better.  There was no shortage of flying birds at Estero Bay so here are a few of my favorite:

I missed this a little because my settings were a little off.  I was so mad when we got back to the hotel and I realized my settings were wrong but it is not too bad.  Good lesson learned for sure!!

Mega Challenge Update

This is an update from a previous post in reference to the Mega Challenge.  The theme was Spoof Movie Posters and I entered this one of Bordeaux:

I was hoping to do a little better but I finished in 5th place.  Not too bad for my first mega challenge.  Don't worry, I will be back!!!

A Different Kind of Bird

Ha!!  Okay, so these are pictures of Tim, not a bird, but I really wanted to include them because they are great pictures of Tim.  While I was taking dramatic pictures of birds during the sunset (see previous post), Tim was taking pictures of the sunset itself.  When I turned around to get one last glimpse of the sunset this is what I saw.  Amazing!!

And then I was caught :) Such a cutie!!

This would be the last picture I would take that night!  Such an amazing sunset!  We certainly made the best out of our only night there!

Adding A Little Drama With The Sun

This is always fun to do.  I have been learning over the past few months that taking a picture is sometimes not enough.  You have to pay attention to the background, sun angle, proper lighting, time of day etc., which all contributes to the drama of the picture.  So when I am giving these opportunities I do everything I can to take advantage of it.

Our first night at Estero Bay was used mainly to scout out the area.  We went to a couple of places but ended up at the beach about a mile from the hotel.  As the sun set, I almost forgot to take pictures because it was so beautiful.  The color of the sky was so intense that it became breath taking.  But in the midst of my amazement, I managed to capture a couple of pictures.

After these, I knew we had to get up early in the morning and try this again.  And I have to say, the sunrise did not disappoint!!

SOOOO much more to come!!  Stay tuned.
